Statistics is the first solo effort from Denver Dalley of Omaha's Desaparecidos. Upon my listen I was greeted with static, the sound of an AM tuner seeking the dial, and then a grinding, synthy rhythm, accompanied by powerful guitar in the vein of Desaparecidos. But in this reviewer's opinion, that's where the similarities end. What Denver creates is a cohesive, layered environment - a balanced blend between synthetic and organic sounds, accompanied by his soft voice. On the first track alone (titled "Another Day"), he exhibits his diversity. The track eventually shifts into low gear, into a sort of ambient sound, and Denver's Voice coming through the "AM tuner" shifting in and out of tune, and then the song shift gears again, before fading into the next track (titled "A Memory") which is an instrumental track featuring melodic acoustic guitar along a somewhat danceable beat, and a repeating, distorted synth sound. In my opinion, this is one of the strongest tracks on the CD, as it showcases his skill at crafting a great instrumental song that holds the listener's attention for the entire duration of the track.
This CD proves that Denver Dalley is a musical force capable of holding his own. It's everything an EP is meant to be--experimental, diverse, and a short but sweet blast to the senses that leaves you begging for an LP.
