Quirky and ecclectic, The Unicorns are two guys from Montreal who make pop songs the way that John Waters makes films. There's a little bit of something for everyone in this album, even for the more hardcore driven of us. As such, it might be a varied few who can enjoy the record in its entirety, but for those few it doesn't get much better.
There are tacks on here that make me slightly jealous; they tend to utilize everything that strikes them as interesting, the way that the pre-disillusioned do, and it just makes the more jaded of us wish we still approached music that way. Vocally there is a raw intensity that is rarely abrasive and generaly likeable, and even the cheapest moments (organs over casio drumbeats, for example) seem to somehow just fit. It's one of those albums that will make you smile.
Perhaps an acquired taste, Unicorns Are People Too is lo-fi electro-pop that will either entertain the hell out of you or annoy you. The Unicorns are deceptively light; there are actually some really strong songs buried beneath the electronic mayhem. Fun record from a young band.
