Decibully
City of Festivals
Polyvinyl

Decibully's City of Festivals is a moody record that struggles to find its footing, but delivers several emotive, melodic tracks that truly display the beauty that can be achieved through orchestrated indie rock. Sometimes it falls short of the mark; at other times, such as the moody track "Your Love is a Tempo", the off-colour vocals mesh quite well with mellow electric guitar and keyboard driven rhythms, like an effective Money Mark track, or a strong rock ballad.

Rhythmically, they are at times reminiscent of the old Omaha band Lullaby for the Working Class, crossing multi-instrumentation with mellow and folky guitar rock, but Decibully delve further into the realm of pop than LFTWC did; vocally the record has a more mainstream vibe, and uses a synth/keyboard strength that Lullaby lacked. That is not always a good thing, as a couple of tracks on the record cross too far over that overproduced, poppy line to make momentarily catchy but eventually forgettable moments.

I really just wish that this record wasn't so ADHD, as the strong tracks are so beautiful (such as the track "Spiderbites", which is musically, lyrically, and vocally amazing). Overall, City of Festivals is pretty good for a debut, and I am definitely interested to see where they go from here.
