Beep Beep
Business Casual
Saddle Creek

Three minutes into the first listen I gave to Omaha quartet Beep Beep's debut release and I wanted to kill them. Seriously; the music is that abrasive, the vocals cut through you like sheetmetal being dragged by a Boeing 747 travelling at top speed, and it wasn't until halfway through the album that I found a single song that seemed worthy of any praise.

Which is why I always listen to things at least three times before reviewing them.

Business Casual is the oft-times not-too-subtle tale of an office gone mad (or rather, the animosity and brooding that lies hidden just below the surface of any "normal" corporate environment). It also reveals itself to be a cohesive, grounded record on about the third listen; the few initially hooky songs get better and better, and the genius in the arrangements of their surrounding counterparts grows and grows on the senses, which is rare, especially for a record which is so dancey. Not Faint dancey, but rock 'n' roll dancey. Which is far better, if you ask me. Which, to be fair, you didn't.

Even the almost annoyingly abrasive opening track, "I am the Secretary", reveals a stunning genius in itself, a delayed catchiness that leaves it the number one track to get stuck in the back of your skull and leave you craving it at odd points, like when using public restrooms or waiting on hold with the gas company. This album is a sleeper hit, and these men are ecclectic geniuses, there is little room for doubt.

This is an odd release for the mostly indie-centric Saddle Creek, but a damn solid record and worthy of your time. Just give it more than two listens before deciding whether to scrap it, you really won't regret it.
